SCHOOL & COLLEGE REGISTERS

School and College Registers are a useful but often ignored source for family historians which may go back into the 16th century.

The advantage of published registers is they often contain potted biographies of the career of the pupil in addition to the date of admission to the particular school or college.
They may also give the age at admission to the school, the father’s name, address and occupation and occasionally sibling’s names. This provides clues to who the pupil is related, where they came from, where they lived due to career changes and sometimes even where, when and how they died.

If a pupil entered the army, navy or the clergy details of their careers are frequently found in school directories including campaigns fought and medals won.

It should also be remembered that schools very often served the entire country not just the particular area in which they were located.
The registers of many schools will include pupils from almost every county in the country and therefore form a useful genealogical guide especially those registers that include parents names.

Anguline Research Archives has one of the largest collections of school and college registers available on CD with many more in the current pipeline.
